Let’s talk it out
I have made a list of things I want in my next NaNoWriMo novel, and I have found that it’s a pretty even mix of what my last (incomplete) NaNo novel is about, and what I’m currently interested in, which is the television show Merlin on BBC (Syfy here in the U.S.).
Just a sampling of the list:
- an ensemble cast
- sci-fi/fantasy
- swords
- adventures at sea
- magic
- futuristic, sort of in an alternate universe way (electricity, zeppelins, cars)
- unknown family identities
Bee pointed out that the list reflects what I’ve had on my mind, which is very true because I’ve been trying to finish my novel before November rolls around. (Just a side note, we are two months away from November. Not a lot of time!) And I’ve been catching up on series 2 of Merlin before series 3 airs in a few weeks, so obviously swords and magic would be on my mind.
But. I got to thinking, I’ve always wanted to write something real, as in, modern day, no elements of sci-fi or sorcery or swashbuckling. Modern setting, with modern characters, with modern situations. I wouldn’t have to go through the stress of creating a whole new believable world that the reader can become a part of. NaNo 2008 was along this vein, about a group of friends who are mostly women, wandering around Philadelphia, PA and living their lives with each other, love lives, lives with family and work, etc. That would get boring after a while, I feel. (I just voiced this thought to Bee and she said it’d show in the writing, so best to avoid it.)
OK, I feel better now. I should do this more often.
Someone also needs to start keeping tabs on my writing 1,000 words or more a day. God. I have no motivation.
